Theology

I am a Unitarian Universalist Buddhist with a deep appreciation for all of the Source Traditions of our Faith. Practice and presence, rather than belief, are the most important aspects of my personal faith. That said, I do experience God regularly. I listen for God's voice in the world and try to attune my life to that voice.

At time, the word God feels like inadequate shorthand, laden with millennia of associations and projections. I appreciate the chosen language of the poet Dylan Thomas, who wrote about "the force that through the green fuse drives the flower [and] drives my green age," which points to the miracle and mystery of life itself.

I embrace our tradition’s focus on covenant rather than creed. Unitarian Universalists make promises about how we will proceed together as people of faith, rather than forming our spiritual lives around prescribed beliefs. Our faith's covenantal orientation creates space in religious communities for people with a wide range of beliefs, if they are oriented toward love, justice, equity and transformation.

To achieve depth in my preaching and teaching, I turn regularly to the source traditions of our faith. In sacred texts, there is excellent counsel about how people of faith can grow in wisdom and love. In direct experience of the world around us, there is fresh insight that enlightens and beauty that can heal.

This quote, from the Rev. Alice Wesley Blair, expresses the heart of covenant. I shared it originally as part of an online theology course I taught during the pandemic. It continues to shape my approach to Unitarian Universalist ministry with love at the center.

The Seventh Principle

In 2021, I led an online class about the seventh principle of Unitarian Universalism. The goal of the class was to help people understand UU theology and history and to prepare participate thoughtfully in the revisions of the principles that were underway.
